From Coffee Curiosity to Craft: The Story Behind George’s Coffee
Where the Idea Was Planted - Central America (2022)
George’s Coffee began with a simple moment of curiosity. In 2022, while travelling through Central America, I drank a cup of coffee that genuinely made me stop and pay attention. It wasn’t just caffeine, it had flavour, balance, and character.
That trip quickly became a hands-on coffee education. I visited coffee farms, saw how beans are grown, picked, processed, and dried, and realised how much work goes into every cup of speciality coffee. I watched my first coffee roaster in action, spoke directly with producers, and tasted more than 20 coffees in a short space of time.
Until then, I’d never experienced a “coffee crash,” but I also never knew coffee could be so varied and intentional. That journey planted the seed for what would later become George’s Coffee.
The Reality Check - United Kingdom (2023)
Returning to the UK meant returning to everyday working life, and, unfortunately, to disappointing coffee.
After drinking carefully roasted, high-quality Central American coffee, switching back to instant coffee was a shock. For a while, it became a routine: drink it, tolerate it, move on. But the difference in quality was impossible to ignore.
When I started mentioning it to others, I realised many people felt the same but had simply accepted mediocre coffee as normal. That shared frustration sparked a deeper curiosity.
Exploring the UK coffee market revealed something surprising: not just inconsistent quality, but often a lack of transparency about sourcing, roast dates, and bean quality. That gap in the market became the next turning point toward building a transparent, quality-driven coffee brand.
When the Idea Became Reality - Kent, UK (2024)
By 2024, the idea of building something of my own had grown too strong to ignore. Coffee had stayed in the background of my mind, waiting for the right time.
That moment arrived when I committed fully. By the end of the year, I’d sourced my own coffee roaster, a 300kg machine sitting in Kent, with no clear plan to move it to West Yorkshire.
With help from my dad, a pickup truck, and a lot of determination, we got it home. Once the roaster arrived, the idea stopped being theoretical. That was the turning point where George’s Coffee moved from concept to reality.
A Year of Learning - West Yorkshire (2025)
At first, I thought I was ready to launch a coffee brand. I built a website, created packaging, worked on logos, and experimented with roast profiles and brewing methods.
The momentum was real, and the brand “Daily Grind” began to take shape. Then came the first major lesson in business.
When I tried to trademark the name, I discovered it was already registered. That meant closing the brand immediately. It was frustrating, but necessary.
That challenge forced a reset, a rethink, and ultimately a stronger foundation. It pushed me back to the drawing board and helped shape the clearer vision that would become George’s Coffee.
More Than Just Coffee
Today, George’s Coffee isn’t just about selling beans. It’s about:
- Transparency in sourcing
- Quality roasting
- Honest flavour profiles
- Helping people experience better coffee at home
It’s built on real experiences, real lessons, and a genuine passion for speciality coffee.
Because great coffee shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be the standard.
