What Coffee to Buy Someone Without a Grinder

Table of Contents

You want to buy good coffee for someone who loves it. They have a cafetière, or a moka pot on the hob, or a filter machine — but no grinder. And now you're staring at words like "whole bean" and "espresso grind" wondering what you're meant to pick.

If that sounds like you, you're in good company. "They love their coffee, but I'm definitely not an expert" is one of the most common things people say when buying coffee as a present. This guide tells you exactly what to buy.

    The Short Answer

    • Don't buy whole beans for someone without a grinder — they can't use them.
    • Buy coffee ground for their brewer. Find out what they use, then match the grind.
    • Not sure what they use? A gift card is the safe choice.

Step 1: Find Out How They Brew

Grind size has to match the brewer. A grind that's perfect for a cafetière will taste weak in an espresso machine, and an espresso grind will turn a cafetière muddy and bitter. So the most useful thing you can do is find out what they make their coffee in.

A few easy ways to find out without spoiling the surprise:

    • Look next to the kettle next time you visit.
    • Ask what they had for breakfast and how they made it.
    • Ask someone they live with.

Step 2: Match the Coffee to the Brewer

    They use… What to buy
Cafetière / French press Any roast in our French Press/Cafetière grind
Cold brew bottle or jar Any roast in our Cold Brew grind, or the Cold Brew Kit
Bean-to-cup machine Whole beans — the machine has a grinder built in
Moka pot (stovetop) Whole beans plus a hand grinder, or a gift card (see below)
Filter machine or pour-over Whole beans plus a hand grinder, or a gift card
Espresso machine without a grinder A gift card, or a grinder — espresso needs a very fine, fresh grind

    Cafetière: The Easy One

If they use a cafetière, you're in luck. Choose any roast and select French Press/Cafetière as the grind. It's ground coarse, which is exactly what a cafetière needs for a rich, clean cup. Not sure which roast? A medium roast is a crowd-pleaser, and a dark roast suits people who take milk.

    Moka Pot: Be Careful

Moka pots need a fine grind — finer than filter coffee, a little coarser than espresso. We don't sell a moka grind, and we'd rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing: our cafetière grind is too coarse for a moka pot, and the coffee will come out thin and weak.

    Your best options are:

    • Whole beans and a hand grinder. The Hario Mini Mill PLUS adjusts from coarse to fine, so it covers a moka pot and anything they buy later. It turns a bag of coffee into a gift they'll use for years.
    • A gift card, so they can choose coffee they know works with their setup.

If you do go for beans, our Dark Chocolate Blend is a great match for a moka pot — deep chocolate with an orange-peel brightness, and lovely with milk.

    Filter Machine and Pour-Over

Filter coffee needs a medium grind, and pour-over a little finer. Again, our cafetière grind is too coarse to brew well in these. Whole beans with a hand grinder, or a gift card, will serve them better.

Is Pre-Ground Coffee OK as a Gift?

Yes — as long as it's the right grind and it's fresh. Ground coffee loses its aroma faster than whole beans once the bag is open, so a few things help:

    • Choose fresh coffee with a roast date. Every George's Coffee bag is hand roasted to order in Yorkshire, with the roast date on every bag.
    • Choose the right size. A 250g bag is ideal for one person drinking a cup or two a day. A 1kg bag suits a household that gets through a lot of coffee.
    • Tell them to seal it. Squeeze the air out and close the bag after every use. Our guide to storing coffee has more tips.

Why Not Just Buy Them a Grinder?

If you want a gift that makes a real difference, a grinder might be it. Freshly ground coffee tastes noticeably more aromatic, and a grinder opens up every brewing method. Paired with a bag of beans or our Starter Bundle of eight 100g coffees, it makes a complete gift. A hand grinder takes a minute or so per cup — some people love the ritual, others would rather not. You know them best.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What grind should I buy for a cafetière?

Coarse. Choose French Press/Cafetière when you order any of our roasts.

Can you use cafetière grind in a moka pot?

Not well. It's too coarse, so the water passes through too quickly and the coffee tastes thin. A moka pot needs a fine grind.

Can I use whole beans without a grinder?

Not really. Whole beans need grinding before you brew. If they don't have a grinder, buy ground coffee for their brewer, add a grinder to the gift, or give a gift card.

What coffee should I buy for a bean-to-cup machine?

Whole beans. The machine grinds them fresh for each cup. Our Starter Bundle is a great way to find their favourite.
